Characteristics of Development Strategy Objectives and TargetsWhatever the particular characteristics of a sustainable development strategy, it should:

* Explicitly adopt “sustainable development” as a conceptual framework.
* Provide a long term approach, with a horizon of a decade or more.
* Reflect a perspective, “integration” to meet social, economic and social decision-making.
* Articulate a definitive strategic orientation.
* Identify specific goals and policies for their achievement.

The strategic processes for sustainable development can vary greatly. The main difference lies in the specific areas with which they are related: first, spatial and politically (“must be designed to international, national, regional, sub-regional or local?) And, secondly, thematically (are related to all sectors and / or problems or just too specific economic sectors and / or themes?, “addressing economic, social and environmental or only selected dimensions of sustainable development?).

Obviously, there are other significant dimensions including a political / legal (what are the sponsors?, what status is the strategy?) Goals and objectives (what is the nature of the objectives?, Are there quantitative targets and qualitative?) and the revision and iteration (is provides for monitoring the progress of the strategy?, does the strategy of a process already under way?).
