If you’re going to join the ranks of the New York Interior Designer, there are some requirements that vary from state to state. In New York, anyone who wants to use the title “Certified Interior Designer,” within the state is required to have a license.
To obtain a license as a certified interior designer in New York State you must be 21 years of age and you must first be of good moral character, and be able to pass the state examination. However just to take the exam there is a level of education and experience in the trade as an apprentice that is required.
Eligibility requirements state that you must accrue at least seven years of acceptable education and experience credits. Of the seven years at least two but no more than five years need to be post-secondary education in a State approved program of interior design. You must graduate with an associate degree or its equivalent. Additionally you need to accumulate at least two years of interior design work experience deemed satisfactory by the State Board for Interior Design.
To be acceptable for licensee your practical experience must be under the direct supervision of an interior designer, architect, or professional engineer and performed within the bounds of interior design practice as set forth in section 8303 of the State of New York’s Education Law.
